アートブックフェアがはじめてでも、心配はいりません。むずかしい知識はひとつも使いません。はじめてのあなたの一日は、たぶんこんなふうに流れます。
Never been to an art book fair? You need no special knowledge at all. Your first day will probably flow something like this.
01みておくLook them up
行く前に、出展者のページを見てみましょう。気になる人がいないかな？ どのアートブックフェアでも、出展者の一覧は会期の前に公開されます。名前と本の写真をいくつか眺めておくだけで、当日に見える景色が変わります。ひとりも決まらなくても平気です。
Before you go, look through the exhibitor pages. Anyone you are drawn to? Every art book fair publishes its list of exhibitors before it opens, and even a few minutes with the names and the photographs changes what you see on the day. It is also fine to arrive with nobody in mind.
02きめるChoose your loop
まずはぐるっと一周してみる？ それとも、ゆっくり一つずつ？ 気になる人のところへ、まっすぐ向かう？ どれでもいいのですが、ひとつ決めておくと迷いません。一周してから戻る人が、いちばん多い気がします。
A quick loop around everything first? Or slowly, one table at a time? Or straight to the person you came for? Any of them works, but choosing one keeps you from drifting. Most people seem to walk the whole room once, then come back.
03手に取るPick one up
二百年前の藩校の大広間に机がならび、その上に本。どの机のむこうにも、その本をつくった本人や、本を届けたいと思って持ってきた人が座っています。気になった一冊を、手に取ってみてください。写真の本、詩の本、漫画、世界に一冊しかない本。買わなくても、だれも気にしません。値段も聞いてみましょう。買えなくてもいいんです。それだけ価値があるんだなあ、大事な本を手に取れたんだなあ。それでいいんです。
In the great hall of a 200-year-old school stand rows of tables, and on them, books; behind every table sits the person who made them, or who wanted to carry them to you. Pick up whatever catches your eye — books of photographs, books of poems, comics, books that exist in a single copy. Nobody minds if you only look. Ask the price, too. It is fine if you cannot buy it — you held something that carries that much worth, and that is enough.
04やすむRest
つかれたら、縁側にすわって中庭をながめてください。講堂の向かいにある離れ・有恒寮では、フランス出身のアーティスト、トマ・ヴォーティエの茶会「読み茶」がひらかれています（予約優先・当日参加も可）。正座しなくてもいいです。
When you tire, sit on the veranda and look out at the courtyard. In Yukoryo, the detached building across from the hall, French artist Thomas Vauthier hosts the Reading Tea gathering (reservations first, walk-ins welcome). You do not have to kneel formally — sit however you like.
05つれてかえるTake home
アートブックを連れて帰るのは特別です。あまり数がないものもあります。全部の本がユニークなオリジナルなこともあります。この世界に数十冊しかない本が自分の戸棚にあると思うと、書物をアーカイブする重大な責務を任されたような気持ちになります。つくった人の顔を知っている本は、本棚にならべたとき、すこし違って見えます。お支払いは現金のみのブースもあるので、現金があると安心です。
Taking an art book home is something special. Some of them exist in very small numbers. Sometimes every copy is a unique original. Knowing that a book which exists in only a few dozen copies now sits on your own shelf, you begin to feel entrusted with something — the serious duty of keeping a book in the world. A book whose maker you have met looks a little different among the others. Some booths are cash only, so it helps to bring some with you.
会場で使う、3つのカード。Three cards to use at the fair
「気づかれにくいけど、こだわったところはどこですか？」と聞いてみてください。紙の選び方、綴じ方、なぜこの形なのか——つくった本人が、その場で答えてくれます。大きな書店では、絶対にできないことです。
Try asking, “What did you take trouble over that people tend to miss?” The paper, the binding, why this shape — the maker answers on the spot. No bookstore can offer you that.

中学生・高校生のあなたへFor junior high and high schoolers
土日の、部活のあとでも間に合います（19時まで）。制服のままでいいし、お金はなくてもいい。
Even after weekend club practice, there is time (open till 19:00). Come in your uniform; no money needed.
美術部も、文芸部も、帰宅部も。ここにある本の多くは、個人や小さなチームが自分たちだけで作ったものです。つまり、あなたにも作れます。
Art club, literature club, no club at all. Most books here were made by one person or a tiny team, on their own. Which means you could make one too.
自分が「かっこいい」と思う表現を、ひとつ見つけてみよう。そして、なぜかっこいいと思ったのか考えてみよう。色？ グラフィック？ 文字のかたち？ 分厚さ？ 重さ？ 紙のさわりごこち？
Find one thing here that you think is just cool. Then ask yourself why. The color? The graphics? The letterforms? How thick it is, how heavy, how the paper feels?
一冊えらんで、分解するつもりで見てみよう。判型、紙、綴じ方、文字の組み方、写真の順番。ノートとペンがあれば作れる本もあります。帰り道には、もう自分の一冊を作りはじめられるかもしれません。
Pick one book and read it like you are taking it apart: the format, the paper, the binding, the typography, the order of the images. Some books need nothing but a notebook and a pen — you could start your own on the way home.
進路に迷っていたら、海外や県外から来た出展者に「どうやって今の活動にたどりついたんですか」と聞いてみよう。進路指導室では聞けない答えが返ってきます。
Unsure about your future? Ask an exhibitor from abroad or another prefecture how they ended up doing what they do. You will hear answers no guidance counselor gives.
学ぶ。書き記す。残す。手渡す。Learn, write, keep, hand on
二百年前、ここは学ぶための場所でした。そのあと八十年近く、本を残すための場所——図書館でした。フェアの二日間に起こることも、じつは同じです。だれかが書き記した一冊を手に取り、つくった人の話を聞き、その本を手渡され、自分の戸棚に残す。一日だけ来たあなたも、その続きにいます。
Two hundred years ago this was a place for learning. For nearly eighty years after that it was a place for keeping books — a library. What happens over these two days is not so different: you pick up something someone wrote down, hear from the person who made it, are handed it, and keep it on your own shelf. Even for a single day, you are part of that line.
