To me, this concept of waza waza speaks to a level of care put into craft that in turn communicates a care for the reader who might encounter it.

About
I'm a writer and independent publisher based in the US. My work moves between hip hop music, illustrated poetry, and comics so that each project offers a different translation of the same story depending on the medium and the collaborators involved. I design my own books and work closely with musicians and visual artists from Japan, Serbia, Australia, Czechia, Latvia, the UK, and beyond. My most recent book, Fruitless..., is an illustrated fable accompanied by an album of music, illustrated by Japanese artist Tanate Asami. I've exhibited at art book fairs in the US, Australia, Czechia, Taiwan, and Japan, and I also offer English proofreading to independent artists and small publishers from around the world at low or no cost as a way of supporting artists.

Present Work
茶の ZINE(制作中・本フェアでのデビュー予定)。
I'll be presenting three main works alongside a variety of other poetry zines and comics: Fruitless... (Japanese edition, 2025). This is a condensed 40-page Japanese translation of my 2023 fable illustrated by Japanese artist Tanate Asami, riso-printed by Retro JAM in Osaka. The book is accompanied by an album of music. In 2025 I stocked this edition in stores across Tokyo, Shizuoka, Okayama, and Hiroshima during a month-long visit to Japan. Rzo #1 (Japanese edition, 2026, debuting at the fair). This is a riso-printed comic illustrated by Japanese artist Mori Yuu, following the motivational lizard mascot of the fictional nutrition brand SureVival as he begins to question the company he has devoted his life to. I also have supplemental brand material and ephemera from SureVival, so my table will showcase aspects of the immersive satirical world built around the story. Tea zines (in progress and intended to debut at this fair). This is my first autobiographical work, collecting writing and photography from teahouses I've visited across different countries and the unexpected connections they've brought into my life. Given the region's relationship with tea, Iga feels like the most meaningful place to debut it. Many of my works come with a free download of music, and I often hand out a download code with exclusive music made for each festival.
Why a book
It has always been important to me to have a physical component to my art, even when the music exists digitally. In my household growing up, physical media like comics, books, newspapers, and CDs made a strong impact on me. As I grew older, I began attending indie comics and zine festivals and worked briefly for an independent comics publisher, which introduced me to the world of self-publishing. As I’ve traveled the world, I’ve encountered zines that have given me unique insight into the individual and the area they came from. (Some of these zines have even led to friendships!) Because of all these experiences, I find the physical component of my art to be an essential point of connection. To me, this concept of わざわざ speaks to a level of care put into craft that in turn communicates a care for the reader who might encounter it. When someone picks up a copy of something I printed, I want them to feel a personal connection, like someone in the world cared enough to consider their experience. Intentionally designed physical media creates a space to slow down and appreciate the work someone has put into their art. And self-publishing in particular allows me to iterate on a design and continue to reinterpret my art so that they are living statements that grow along with the people who encounter them.
Why Iga
I’ve visited Japan for extended stays multiple times in the last few years, and when I visit I prioritize seeing smaller areas. Many of my travels also center around tea, so in 2025 I visited Mie, in part because it was a new area to explore, but also because my wife runs a farmer’s market stall in the US that sells homemade onigiri, moon cakes, and other Asian snacks, and I wanted to introduce people to quality Japanese tea. I was able to source tea from a local farm in Yokkaichi, and we are now showcasing kabusecha at our market! Exhibiting in Mie would be a nice full-circle moment. I have a broader interest in continuing to build connections in Japan, and exhibiting has always been one of the most genuine ways I know how to do that: by showing up somewhere with something you made, and seeing who it resonates with. I also sometimes exhibit books that I proofread for kuš! komiks, a Latvian publisher of indie comics anthologies that collect artists from around the world.
