If it's only about looking at photographs, a screen might be enough.

About
STAIRS PRESS is an independent publisher started in 2016 by photographers and designers from Japan and China. It is currently based in Tokyo. Centering on photography and art, we produce photobooks and artist books in small editions, born out of dialogue with the artists. We carry each book through from planning, editing, and design to production together with the artist, continuing to make books while searching for the form best suited to each work. To date we have published, among others, Yuan Chaofan's 'The River Knows Everything — Arakawa' and 'The River Knows Everything — Huangpu River,' Azusa Kurihara's 'ETUDE,' Takahiro Mizushima's 'Long Hug Town,' Li Zhengde's 'INVISIBLE WORLD,' and Asuka Wakida's 'HAPPENING.'

In addition to the photobooks and art books listed above that we have published so far, we plan to exhibit and sell artist-made zines and more. Details of new work are still undecided as it is currently in production, but we plan to present it in a small edition.
Why a book
We want to make photobooks and art books that last a long time. The landscapes and people an artist has gazed upon; memories and sensations that may eventually be lost. We want to preserve, as a single book, the intense gaze contained within them. If it were only a matter of looking at photographs, a screen might be enough. If it were only a matter of presenting work, there are faster and more efficient methods. Even so, we make books because we want to deliver it as a single experience — including the order in which the photographs are arranged, the texture of the paper, the speed of turning the pages, and even the weight in one's hands.
Why Iga
We believe a book does not end when it is made; it takes on new meaning by passing into someone's hands, being read, and being talked about. We usually work based in Tokyo, but we also feel that books are not something that circulate only within cities. To hand over our own books in a place like Iga, and to have readers and makers exchange words on the spot. To encounter unknown people and places through a book. We feel a great appeal in that time.
