活動について
About
I am based in Kanagawa and Tokyo. I pay attention to the arrangements and states of things within everyday scenes, photographing subjects that have been set slightly apart from their meaning or use. I have self-produced and published several photo zines to date.

Why a book
Recently, when I looked at the back of a DVD, I had a strange sensation. Along with nostalgia, I also felt something fresh. Since it became ordinary to encounter films and music through subscriptions, works tend to appear as thumbnails. Titles and jacket images catch the eye, but there is almost no occasion to come into contact with the synopsis and the layout of scene photographs on the back of a DVD, or with the design of a CD’s lyric booklet and disc surface. What I realized then was that I am strongly drawn not only to the work itself but also to what surrounds it. A book has a front cover and a back cover. It has margins, it has an order, and it can be closed. Unless you turn the page, the next photograph will not appear. Those parts other than the photographs shape the distance to a photograph and the way one meets it. I do not want to make books solely in order to present photographs. I want to give form to everything, including what lies around the photograph. If efficiency were all that mattered, there would be any number of easier ways. Even so, the reason I choose the form of the book is that I want to create the very environment in which photographs are seen. I want to give form to the distance, the order, and even the boundaries one crosses in reaching the work. In order to give a single form to the space and time surrounding a photograph, I go to the trouble of making books.
Why Iga
Along with my wish to deliver my work to Iga, an unknown place, I was also drawn to the very space of the venue, the historic Sukodo. Rather than photographing some special event, my photographs turn their attention to the quiet sense of unease within everyday life and to the margins that arise within the relationships between one thing and another. In the architecture of Sukodo, too, I sensed such margins and stillness. Rather than filling the space excessively, it seems to leave room for all things to exist quietly and for the gaze to come to rest. That sensation overlaps somewhere with what I am searching for through photography. That is precisely why I wanted to place my work in this space. I am also looking forward to the new encounters that may arise in a place far from Kanagawa, where I usually work.
